His Excellency Umaru Tanko Almakura has called on residents of Nasarawa to adhere to best practice towards protecting their property from fire by have firefighting equipment (fire extinguishers) on standby so they could do something before the fire service would arrive.
Governor Almakura made the call addressing the press at the scene of the recent fire outbreak at the Lafia Timber Shed, when he came to sympathize with the timber traders, where he described fire outbreaks as sometimes an act of God, which could be only sometimes be reduced if the people themselves take of fire preventing steps, such as those with large households to have at least one fire extinguisher and the same for persons with vehicles to enable them try to save some of their property before the arrival of the fire service.
The Governor noted that as part of efforts to forestall the reoccurrence of such incidents, Government has been expanding the scope of the firefighting infrastructure, stating that the state government had awarded a contract for the construction of a new state of art fire service office in Lafia which was about 90% completed within state capital in addition to the procurement of modern firefighting equipment and vehicles to enhance fire services in all LGAs across the state.
