His Excellency Umaru Tanko Almakura has made it known that the Nasarawa state Government was partnering with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) toward the establishment of an Institute of Technical Education that would have the objective of youth empowerment skill acquisition , as well as promote science and technology .
Gov. Almakura made this know as he inaugurated a 16 man committee to be Chaired by the Hon. Commissioner Science and Tech Prof. Jonathan Mamu Ayuba which would consists of Nasarawa State Government and the NASENI membership to work towards the setup and takeoff of the Institute of Technical Education, Lafia.
The governor said this was as a result of the Memorandum of Understanding entered with the Institute of Technical Education , Singapore to train our youths on the skills acquisition to be in tune with global best practices especially the labour sector where modern technology and modern ways of impacting technical education.
He spoke on the equipment procured from Singapore since which would enable the youth learn skills in various vocations such as plumbing , Air Conditioner repair , refrigeration , Computer assembly and repairs, nursing , telecom technicians earlier meant to equip the technical colleges and vocational centers across the state in accordance with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) , however following a tour of these schools by experts from Singapore it has become imperative to change priorities to a more robust , Technical Tertiary Institute for skills acquisition necessary to both the formal and informal sectors of the economy .
The Governor spoke on the technology transfer that would come to the state with the opening of this world class institute which would provide unlimited opportunities to the students and the opportunity further their studies. He made it known that with the coming of Dangote group and Chinese invests that they would be there to support and provide possible jobs to youth that have been trained in areas of power generation and distribution etc.
He made it known that in selecting the members of the Committee government was guided by their professionalism , commitment to service, integrity , honesty , self-discipline and patriotism and strong belief that they would carry be meticulous and thorough in carrying out this noble assignment.
Delivering the vote of thanks Hon. Commissioner Science and Tech Prof. Jonathan Mamu Ayuba commended the Government for setting up such a committee that had such people on it .
Prof. Ayuba said this was as sure sign of the governments determination to ensure the development of Technical Education , also praising the political will the Governor has put towards the getting the institute started for the benefit of the state and its people .
He assured the governor that with the collective wealth of experience of the committee they would try to exceed the expectations of all and ensure that they reshape Nasarawa State technical education as well as ensure that the Technical education programme in the state starts without any hitches, stating they would ensure they submit their report on time.

The Committee’s Mandate include
Advise on modalities for establishment and smooth take off of the Nasarawa State Institute of Technical Education
Determine the management structure, functions and organogram of the Agency
Develop the curriculum and syllabi for the institute in accordance with the Economic Empowerment Policy Direction of the Administration as well as the requirement of Regulatory Bodies of Technical Education.
Determine the essential machinery , equipment and personnel required for the smooth take off of the institute.
Advise on the sustainability of the partnership between Nasarawa state Government and the Institute of Technical Education Singapore, as well as collaboration with the National Agency for Science & Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) for the attainment of the goals and objectives for the establishment of the Institute of Technical Education .
Advise Government on the implementation of the MOU signed in 2012 between Nasarawa state Government and NASENI on the establishment of Solid Minerals Machinery & Equipment Development Institute (SOMMEDI)
